3D & Ceramics > Philosophy

The 3D area is philosophically concerned with exploring the complex relationships between form, process, material and content. As such, courses take on an interdisciplinary character that encourages experimentation and synthesis, and emphasizes the development of strong conceptual and critical thinking skills. The 3D area takes full advantage of its diverse faculty body, the varying interests and expertise of which are apparent in our course offerings. The BFA curriculum covers all the fundamental technical processes as methods of approaching complex thematic issues. Additionally, students take courses in Installation and Performance, as well as cross-disciplinary courses outside of the 3D area (a cross-over advanced course with Photography and various theme courses with Drawing, African Art and Electronic Media). The interdisciplinary nature of the 3D area is perhaps most clearly visible in the work of our graduate students. The MFA Program is intense and intensive: the faculty work one-on-one with graduate students from across disciplines. Admissions and progress toward graduate studies thesis completion do not require an area of specialization. Graduate student work often incorporates digital media, performance, photography, text and public or site work into a broad three-dimensional practice.
