The Video, Animation, and Digital Arts curriculum offers a unique opportunity for artists to pursue a cutting edge approach to Video, 2D and 3D Animation, 3D Modeling, Sound, and Digital Media. This comprehensive digital arts program offers students the ability to both develop an expertise in specific digital tools and allows students the flexibility to combine classes to hone a student’s individual artistic voice.
Video courses expose students to the technical and conceptual skills needed to produce high quality video and audio works. Curriculum focuses on pre-production, production and post-production skills including Story-Boarding, Editing, Camera Operating, Lighting, and Composing Moving Images, within the context of contemporary art.In all courses, students also work on concept development as they are exposed to the history and theory of media, moving image, and sound.Intermediate courses are theme based, and include but are not limited to “Live Action Filmmaking,” “Video Art Goes to the Movies,” “Video and Sound Installation,” “Video for Sound,” “Distance Collaborations,” “Narrative Video,” and “Abstract Video.”All courses look towards current trends in video art including experimental pre-production and post-production of video works, digital imaging, animation, as well as integration of other digital and traditional artist tools and areas, including installation, performance, web art, public art and more. Students who wish to combine digital arts with other disciplines will find the program very accommodating. Although we have a defined curriculum it is quite flexible and we encourage all students to find their own individual artistic voice incorporating digital tools.
2D Animation (ART 3616C)
2D animation is a hands-on exploration of the principles, practices, and issues involved in the creation of computer-aided animated sequences. The course emphasizes the craft of articulating motion and change over time, specifically as it relates to animation. In the course, students focus on a range of topics including strategies to plan animation, interface concerns, animation principles, transitions, narrative, and the aesthetics of motion. The intent is not only for students to be able to emulate motion, but also analyze, exaggerate, and construct actions that both manage viewer attention and enhance meaning. Students use a range of approaches that stem from hand-drawn, motion graphics, and stop-motion animation. In addition, students will learn about other artists and designers who either use animation as a part of their work or address concerns related to it. Digital Modeling (ART 3610C) <3D Fundamentals Emphasis>
Digital modeling is an exploration of 3D digital modeling techniques for animation and other applications within the creative arts. In the course, students model, texture, light, and render objects that they create in a 3D environment while learning about its related history, theory, and practices. Throughout the course, students will not only explore the tools and creative process, but will also explore how formal choices impact meaning. There is additional discussion of artists and designers who either use digital modeling as a part of their work or address concerns related to it. This course focuses on the entire 3D image making process, which includes modeling tools and techniques, topology, 3D design, texturing, lighting, rendering, and possibilities for 3D printing physical models. Digital Modeling < Digital Sculpting Emphasis>
Digital Sculpting is an exploration of high polygon digital modeling. Though some of the principles of traditional modeling are discussed, this course emphasizes the intuitive development of organic sculptural forms through brush based digital sculpting software. The process is often described as working with "digital clay". Students explore digital sculpting for the development of images, animation, and 3D printing. Students will also learn approaches to create and use 3d scan data. Throughout the course, students will not only explore the tools and creative process, but will also explore how formal choices impact meaning. There is additional discussion of artists and designers who either use digital sculpting as a part of their work or address concerns related to it. 3D Animation focuses on animating characters and objects within digital 3D environments. The course focuses on visual story telling, the dynamics of motion, and the development compelling performances. In the course, students will plan and storyboard scenes, layout camera and scene objects, setup models for animation, explore character performance and motion, learn animation workflow strategies, render, and composite their final sequences. While emphasis is on the animation process, students are also introduced to rigging and character setup in order to create their own animation ready 3D models. There is additional discussion of animators, animation studios, artists, and designers who either use 3D animation as a part of their work or address concerns related to it. Advanced 3D Animation
Advanced 3D Animation focuses on the development of experimental animation and animated shorts. Students progressively build on skills that they have developed in the 3D Animation and Digital Modeling courses to create independent theme-based projects from start to finish. Students explore the full animation process with projects that are primarily self-directed. Students gain additional instruction on rigging and character set up, the creation of production ready models, creative rendering strategies, and time management which is applied in the development of their work. Both 3D Animation and Digital Modeling are prerequisites to this course.
